Obituary

Donald Barry Dawson passed away peacefully on Dec 3rd 2021 at Kincardine Hospital at the age of 83 with family by his side. Loving husband of Nancy of 61 years and cherished father to Susan (Paul) and Sandra (Steve), devoted brother of Wilda (Mike). Don will be lovingly remembered by grandchildren Steven (Ainslie), Jacquelyn (Nate), Ryan (Arielle) and great grandchild Dawson.

Born in Toronto, Don attended Ogden Public School and Jarvis Collegiate where he met the love of his life, Nancy. Taking over the family business, Central Ornamental Glass, after the early deaths of Don’s parents, he proudly provided signs for the new Toronto Subway and ballroom signs for the Royal York Hotel.

But Don had a bigger passion to serve his community and he joined the OPP in Toronto where he was a member of the Golden Helmet Motorcycle Squad. With strong family roots in Bruce County, Don soon transferred to the Kincardine OPP and moved to a farm near Ripley where he was a cow/calf hobby farmer for over 20 years and a minor hockey coach. He embraced his love of music, playing the bagpipes and becoming the Pipe Sergeant in the OPP Commissioner's Own Pipes and Drums band travelling North America and piping for Ontario Premiers and dignitaries.

After 28 years of policing, Don retired and focused on music where he played saxophone in the Light House Swing Band, Kincardine United Church Band, the Foghorns, Goderich Town Band and a Dixieland band. Don was also a dedicated member of the Northern Light Masonic Lodge.

Cremation has occurred and a private service will be held for Don where his love of farming, music and most of all family, will be celebrated.

Hello from Kincardine, Ont.

I went to High school in Lucknow  with Wilda, Don's sister.  She and I were great friends and I unfortunately lost conact after I moved to London for my first job.  And if I remember right she moved to Don Mills after graduation to be closer to her brother and his family.

I know how much she admired her big brother and his family was a great comfort to her when her Mom passed away.

My folks are gone too and my brother so I know this is another hard thing to go through.  All my best to everyone and, Wilda, please feel free to send email or call or drop in some day.

Love Jo

We are so very sorry to hear about Don's passing. We spent many enjoyable hours listening to - and playing - music with Don. He was a very smooth musician.

His exterior projection was of the stern police officer but inside he was all warmth and compassion.

Rest easy, Don.

Message from Marilyn Smith2021-12-05 16:42:14

The first time I met Don, he was pulling me over to give me a ticket for speeding.    I informed him, “You give me that ticket and I won’t buy a ticket to the Policeman’s Ball.”

As he ripped off the ticket he said,”We don’t have a Policeman’s Ball.  Here’s your ticket!”

I remember Don feeding the birds massive amounts of bird seeds to keep them coming back to his yard.  He was a quiet and fun filled friend, with a great talent for music.

Nancy and family, while this is a difficult time, you have many memories to keep Don forever in your hearts.

Hugs, Marilyn Smith and Wayne McCann
