Obituary

Ruth Swan, née Anderson. July 15th, 1933 - May 23rd, 2021

Peacefully at home in Guelph, in the presence of her loving family. Survived by her beloved husband of 68 years, Dr William J Swan, and by daughters Mary (Alex Porter), Barb (Brian Wolf), and Sue, and sons Bill (Cathy) and Mike (Janice). Also by grandchildren Emma Porter, Ryan, Aaron and Adam Haid, Spencer and Somer Swan, and Laura and Claire Swan.

Ruth was predeceased by her brother George Anderson, and is survived by her sister and best friend, Mary (Anderson) Hunter. She will be especially missed by good friends Gail (MacMillan) O’Reilly and Marty Bagworth.

Ruth grew up in Lucknow, Ontario, and raised her family in Walkerton, London and Guelph, before moving to Homebank Farm near Ennotville. She taught us how to be good human beings and she taught us how to laugh, and never to take ourselves too seriously. We will always cherish and miss her more than could possibly be expressed.

Private committal service at Greenhill Cemetery has taken place. A Celebration of Life will follow when it becomes possible to gather again.

We are very grateful for the assistance of CCAC, and offer heartfelt thanks to Dr David Hood for his compassionate care and support. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Foundation of Guelph General Hospital. And to honour Ruth’s memory, please perform a quiet act of kindness. Then keep on doing it.

Dr. Swan and family,

Please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of your wife, Dr. Swan and the passing of your children's mother.

The obiturary expressed the sorrow you and your family are experiencing and I know the grief that will continue. It reads, your wife, Ruth taught her family to be good human beings and how to laugh. Two extremely important values loved ones will use everyday with the knowledge she taught them these very important life skills.

Dr. Swan, I had the good fortune to meet you and your wife a few years ago. She was extremly gracious in her greeting to me.

With friends to comfort you and memories to strenghten you, I wish you these things in this time of sorrow.

Carolyn Heffernan

Dear Bill - Deb and I were so saddened to learn of Ruth's recent passing - The news via Paul Wright (Kennedy Club) brought back such a flood of great memories not only of you but of course Ruth as well. We send our deepest sympathies to you and your family.

Ruth was always so welcoming with a wonderful smile on her face and twinkle in her eye whether she was conversing with J.C. or some new members of 'The Club' - i.e. Us! As the supposed 'Historian' of the Club Deb and I had the opportunity to see many pictures of you and Ruth, always in the thick of things and always with a smile on your faces!

Thank you for sharing such a lovely warm lady with us all.

Deb and I often think of you as we travel the back roads from my sister's house in Breslau up to our cottage in Algonquin via Fergus, Orangeville, Primrose, etc. to the 400 and pass through Enottville - I think Speedside where my parents lived is the only place that might be smaller! We may also be the only members of Kennedy Club who know where Enottville is!

Our best wishes go out to you and your family and may you continue to be well.

Sincerely,

Tom & Deb.

Dear Bill. We lost Ruth, very sad cause she was a star.

Bill, remember when you had the old dog to put down and Ruth called you at the vets and said, "Bill. have you put the dog down?"

You said "not yet." She said bring the dog home cause when you backed the car out of the garage, you ran over the new kitten we bought to replace the dog." She laughed a lot with us and with you Bill. Her outer beauty was matched by her inner soul..

Message from Dr. Bob Yovanovich 2021-05-29 15:33:33

My very sincere condolences to Bill and his family. My memory of Ruth is that of a smiling, congenial and intelligent woman who laughingly shared in Bill's many stories. Although I sadly haven't had the opportunity to visit with Ruth and Bill over the years, they have remained fondly in my thoughts.

RIP Ruth

Sincere Sympathy to the Swan family and sister Mary from the Lucknow MacIntyre clan.  We go back to days at Lucknow High and were very close friends with brother George.  It was so nice to have a visit with the girls at the last reunion.  Hold on to all the precious memories you cherish.

To Uncle Bill, Barb and the rest of the Swan crew:

I was so sorry to hear about Aunt Ruth's death. You are going to miss her so much, but I hope your memories of her give you moments of comfort in the times ahead. I have been thinking of you all in the last couple of days and remembering the times when I was a kid and our families spent holidays together. Aunt Ruth was always caring and loving and really funny! I remember how much my Mom and Dad loved her. She was one of the good people in this world and will be missed!

Take care of yourselves.

Laurie

On behalf of your extended family, Bill, I wish to extend our prayers ahd heartfelt empathy at this time to the Swan family on the loss of Ruth. It is hard to say "fare thee well" to someone close, but especially to a parent, your mom. Having been to the farm and to your Willow Road Manor and seeing your mom and dad was always a treat. She always had a warm welcome and a smile to greet all visitors. Jordan, Justin, Tina and I extend to your family, especially your dad, our deepest condolences but also our hope that you treasure her gift of presence in your lives. Celebrate her life and do so by supporting one another completely at this time as she would wish it. May God grant her rest in her new home "on the other side" and grant all of you, notably your dad, peace, comfort and love. Best regards to all.  Tina and Will; Jordan, Kay and Adrian; Justin, Olivia and Skyler.

Dear Dr. Swan, Barb, and all the rest of your family,

I am very sorry to learn the sad news of the passing of Mrs. Swan.  I remember well joining you for Sunday dinners when I was in university with Barb and since then have enjoyed our visits together.  Mrs. Swan always made me feel very welcome with her lovely sense of humour, fun-loving and yet relaxed disposition.  I know that you will all miss her very much.  Dave joins me in extending our very sincere condolences.
