Edward “Roy” Keane passed away at his home in Newmarket, Ontario on May 20, 2020 in his 83rd year.
Roy was born January 14th, 1937 to James and Irene (Moran) Keane of Lucknow, Ontario.
Beloved husband of Marlene Keane (Hunter) for 55 years. Dear father of Arlene Parsons, Brian Keane, and daughter-in-law Noki. Proud Grandfather to Jack, Fiona, and Brayden. Roy is survived by his sister Ruth Currie (Keane). Predeceased by son-in-law Jamie Parsons, and brother-in-laws Robert “Bob” Currie and Larry Hunter.
In his working life, Roy achieved 34 years of service with various departments within the Government of Ontario. Upon receiving his Business degree he was employed with the Ministry of Transportation and Communications in Stratford and then in Bancroft. Roy excelled in this work and made many lifelong friends throughout this period of time. His next position in his career journey was with the Ministry of Natural Resources in Richmond Hill. Roy thrived in this new role which involved the auditing and overseeing of many of Ontario’s provincial parks. He enjoyed the scenery and outdoors, especially the wildlife - which continued to be a lifelong interest. Often this role would take an adventurous turn. At one point Roy was flown out to Thunder Bay to assist in his capacity with Natural Resources during the time of the forest fires. Roy’s final years with the government, before retirement in 1993, were spent as a Payroll Supervisor in Toronto at Queen’s Park. In addition to Payroll duties he was responsible for interviewing, hiring, and training new staff. He was very proud of his work in Queen’s Park and found it especially rewarding helping others in their career paths. He made many good friends during this time who are still in touch. After retirement Roy worked as a security guard in the York Region Administration Building and then in the King Crest Condominium Units on Davis Drive, both in Newmarket. He was adored by the staff, management, and residents, in King Crest and had many good memories of this time.
Roy’s family and friends will most remember him as a Family Man, good provider, loving, loyal, and caring. He had a quick sense of humour, infectious smile, loved a good joke, and always had a hearty laugh - especially at any type of physical comedy. Roy inherited skills and a love of carpentry from his father. He also enjoyed wallpapering and decorating and was often engaged at projects at his own home or was helping others. Roy’s greatest pleasures in life revolved around family. He often reminisced about the trips he and Marlene took to see Arlene in Swansea Wales and Brian in Burnaby B.C., San Francisco California, and Seattle Washington. In later years the grandchildren brought him so much joy. He took a tremendous amount of pleasure in hearing about their adventures and enjoyed any visits whether it be through Skype or in person.
Roy will be greatly missed by family and friends in Canada, the United States, and in the United Kingdom.
A graveside service will be held at Greenhill Cemetery, in Lucknow, Ontario at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that you make a donation to a charity of your choice in honour of Roy.
