Donald Murray Dennis, of Tiverton and formerly of Lucknow passed away peacefully at the Kincardine Hospital on February 4th, 2026 at the age of 86. He is survived by his wife, Joy (née Weber), and his sister Olga (Murray) Smith of Seaforth. Beloved father of Michael Donald Dennis and his wife Jacqueline (née McPherson), and Jody Murray Dennis. He was a proud grandfather to Mathew, Andrew, and Jenna Dennis, and to Lisa and Josh Dennis, and a delighted great grandfather to James and Cohen Dennis.
Don was the eldest child of Clarence Murray Dennis and Mary Margaret (nee MacKinnon) Dennis. Don grew up on a farm outside Atwood near Listowel, where he excelled in local athletics such as hockey, basketball, and track and field. Don’s favourite sport had to be baseball, where in September, 1953, he led the Atwood Bantams to an Ontario Baseball Championship with a 21 strikeout no hitter in the decisive game. Don later received an invitation from Walter O’ Malley to attend a Brooklyn Dodgers Major League Baseball camp. His parents, however, believed that a University education was more important, so Don went on to attend Wilfred Laurier University to earn a teaching degree. Don began teaching at the high school in Lucknow and later joined the staff of F.E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham, where he spent the remainder of his career.
A dedicated educator, he taught mainly Latin and Physical Education, sharing both his love of language and his passion for athletics. Over the years, he coached numerous teams—including football, soccer, and basketball—and was known for the encouragement, discipline, and quiet confidence he instilled in his students and athletes.
Don loved keeping busy maintaining and working around his house and property on Stauffer Street in Lucknow. Finishing wood furniture became a favourite hobby, and he loved starting his day with the paper and working on the daily crossword and Sudoku.
Don’s legacy lives on in the many students he taught, the athletes he coached, and the family, especially his wife Joy, whom he loved so deeply.
Special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff, that made dad’s stay in Palliative care at the Kincardine Hospital as comfortable and caring as possible.
Arrangements have been entrusted to MacKenzie & McCreath Funeral Home, Lucknow. A Private Celebration of Don’s Life will be held in the Spring. Interment Fairview Cemetery, Listowel.

I can’t say this any better than Michael already has, but I want to add my voice. Don was a steady, guiding presence in my life — a mentor, a neighbor, and someone whose integrity and kindness quietly shaped who I became. I feel incredibly grateful to have known him and to have grown up alongside your family.
To Joyce, Michael, Jody, and the entire Dennis family — I’m holding you in my heart and sending my deepest condolences. Don’s influence and spirit will always be remembered.

So sorry to hear of the loss of Mr. Dennis. He taught me Latin at F.E. Madill for Grades 10, 11 & 12, giving me a solid grounding in English word roots. My sympathy.
My condolences to you and your family on your loss. Don and your family were such a wonderful part of my childhood growing up in Lucknow. Don or later as I had known him as mister Dennis inspired me to keep playing sports through my teenage years and he had a strong energy that poured over to others around him. He was an awesome guy and a great educator.

Dear Joy, Mike, Jody and families ... I am so sorry to learn of Don's passing. I very much cherish the time spent with you all during my posting in Lucknow ... what fun and giggles we all enjoyed together. I especially enjoyed Don's wit and dry sense of humour. My sincere condolences to you all. Farewell old friend!
To Joy, Mike, Jody and Families, we send our sympathy to all Don's family. We have many fond memories of Don over the years. When he began teaching Latin in Lucknow, we were students there. Later, we taught together for many years at Madill. Don willingly shared his knowledge and experience in Physical Education with me. To Joy, Mike, Jody and families our sincere condolences. We have many wonderful memories of times together cheering on the boys’ hockey team. Then as we’d meet later how we enjoyed chatting and reliving those fun times. Keep all your memories close.
To Joy, Mike, Jody and families, we extend our sincere sympathy. Mr. Dennis ( I could never call him Don!) was a dedicated and respected teacher to both of us at FEMSS. And then we were lucky enough to be neighbours with the Dennis family when we lived on Stauffer Street. We will be thinking of you all as you celebrate his wonderful life.
Dear Joy, Mike, Jody and families. Linda and I were sad to learn of Mr. Dennis's passing. It has always been a little more difficult for me to call him Don as I always wanted to show him the respect that he had always shown us. Don left such an impression on me at F.E. Madill be it teaching, coaching, or just chatting which he always had time for. I was lucky enough to see the "home" side of Mr. Dennis when I was with Jody and MIke at the Dennis home on Stauffer St. as well. Thoughts and prayers to you.

our sincere condolences to the family. He will be missed.
Joy and family, my sincerest condolances and prayers at this time. Mr. Dennis was one my favourite teachers when I attended FE. Madill and Latin was one of my favourite classes.
A few years ago, I dropped in at "Mr. Dennis" home in Kincardine to see if he remembered me & see if he would donate to my annual Walk for Alzheimer's. After talking for a few minutes, he said "stop" I could not understand why? He told me, "You were the quietest student I ever had at Lucknow High, thanks for showing me you came out of that shell". In his memory, I will be making a donation toward my 15th year of Walking for Alzheimer's. Rest in Peace Mr. Dennis. Peter Carter
Dear Joy, Michael, Jody, and Families, Sorry for your loss. Don was, always a good teacher who ensured all listened and got the best out of his lessons. There are some enjoyable memories of haying out on the McDougall farm with Mr. Dennis and Slim, too. Sending lots of community support to all.
Farewell Mr. Dennis - you were an exceptional Latin teacher and taught with a wonderful voice and sense of humour. Thinking of you and your family at this difficult time. Susan Chapman

Dear Joy, Mike, Jody and families.
It is with deep sadness that I am reading of Mr. Dennis' passing. Growing up the hill and around the corner in Lucknow, brings fond memories of our neighbourhood. Being in school with Jody also brought me to your home in our much younger years. I fell in love with Latin because of Mr. Dennis (even in later years, I called him that out of respect) and made learning about medications for my paramedic career, so much easier. My deepest condolences to all of the family and may you cherish all the beautiful memories. May he Rest in Peace.
