The family of Paul Pentland are heartbroken to announce he passed away on Wednesday September 3, 2025 at the age of 58 after a short brave battle with cancer. He leaves behind his devoted wife Rosemary, and seven children, Eugenia, George, Emma, Isabelle, Queenie, Opal and Pearl Pentland. He is loved by his mother in law Barbara Gorman, and his father in law Chris Burdzy, as well as his sister in law Susan Jane, and nephew Azrael Burdzy. He will be missed by his many cousins, especially Jeff Pentland, Robert Pentland and Randy Pentland and their families. He is greatly missed as well by his other large family at Compass Minerals Goderich Mine.
Paul was a kind gentleman, who was a farmer, father, and friend. He loved his life on the farm near Nile being a dairy and beef farmer. He loved all things John Deere, and his Ford trucks! He was an avid Huron County Plowman, and even though he always seemed to come in third in his class, he just ate, slept and breathed everything plowing, and recently taught his daughters to compete. He adored all his children when they were born and was a devote father for the past twenty seven years teaching his only son and team of daughters how to farm, how to learn to do things for themselves, and to work hard. After the dairy side of farming was retired, he accepted a job at Sifto Salt mine, now known as Compass Minerals. Where he started out working as a miner, being one of the first to use the new continuous miner equipment at the time and enjoyed working along with his fellow union brothers. He later went on to become a Ground Control Supervisor managing a crew. He enjoyed his job at the mine very much, and his friendships he made there over the years and it became a very important part of his life.
We would like to thank all of Paul’s medical teams, be it doctors, nurses, specialists, and psw’s who helped care for Paul on his journey! As well as friends, neighbours, cousins, co workers and strangers for their prayers, well wishes, visits, cards, donations of food, money, fixing equipment, field work, and helping with the cattle.
We welcome Paul’s friends to a Celebration of Life on Sunday September 14th 2025 1pm to 4pm come and go in Dungannon at (the former insurance office) 81 Southampton Street. Please use the big front doors, wheelchair accessible. Private burial to take place.
Donations can be made if you wish, to the Alexandra Marine and General Hospital in Goderich, in Paul’s name.
Close the Gate (For Dad)
By Nancy Kraayenhof
For this one farmer the worries are over, lie down and rest your head,
Your time has been and struggles enough, put the tractor in the shed.
Years were not easy, many downright hard, but your faith in God transcended,
Put away your tools and sleep in peace. The fences have all been mended.
You raised a fine family, worked the land well and always followed the Son,
Hang up your shovel inside of the barn; your work here on earth is done.
A faith few possess led your journey through life, often a jagged and stony way,
The sun is setting, the cattle are all bedded, and here now is the end of your day.
Your love of God’s soil has passed on to your kin; the stories flow like fine wine,
Wash off your work boots in the puddle left by blessed rain one final time.
You always believed that the good Lord would provide and He always had somehow,
Take off your gloves and put them down, no more sweat and worry for you now.
Your labor is done, your home now is heaven; no more must you wait,
Your legacy lives on, your love of the land, and we will close the gate.

Paul and I had a lot of fun growing up on the farm. Though we held different perspectives, especially later in life, I acknowledge the role Paul, my brother, played in my life and in our family’s story. I believe we each come into this world to learn and to grow, and even when lessons feel unfinished, the journey continues beyond this life.
Paul, may you now be surrounded in peace, and in the loving heavenly embrace of Mom (Yvonne), Dad (Ron), and our brother Jim.
To Rosemary, Eugenia, George, Emma, Isabelle, Queenie, Opal, and Pearl — my deepest sympathies.

I worked with Paul briefly at the mine. He was always very nice to me whenever I need help or a hand with anything when I was learning. I'm very sorry for your loss. He was a good man.
