It is with deep sadness that our family announce the peaceful passing of Betty Leonard after 94 years of a full and productive life. Betty simply got tired of being old and frail. Being independent was one of Betty’s lifelong strengths. Her friendly lawyer said it best with his condolence that “Betty had joined Bill in the right-hand seat on their next flight together”. We can only hope that the cargo holds a large library of good books as reading was one of her favourite pastimes. After the work was done of course!
Betty is survived by her 3 children, Thomas (Wendy), Patricia, and Morris (Beverley). She has shared in and celebrated the lives of 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She will be missed by her loving sister Lois Gamble and family of Brandford.
Betty was raised on a farm outside of Grand Valley, moved to Cooksville to work in the Royal Bank for her future father-in-law, and started dating Bill after being confined together during a bank holdup! She raised her family in the growing community of Cooksville. She “retired” to Acton and also to a small farm outside of Ripley where Bill kept her busy with a large garden and a small woodlot operation so that their homes could be heated with woodstoves. Betty enjoyed many summers and holiday times in Point Clark with numerous generations of the Leonard family but especially Bill’s 3 sisters, Elaine, Cork, and Janet. Betty has been the go-to resource for many when facts or memories of times past were sought after.
While Betty’s kindness, thoughtfulness, sense of humour, practicality and loving support will be greatly missed, we all have a wealth of wonderful memories of Betty (and Bill) to share and be grateful for.
The family greatly appreciate and wish to recognize the caring staff at Harbour Hill in Goderich over the past four years and also the Doctors, care specialists and nurses at the AMGH.
Betty has been cremated and the family will have a Celebration of Life event for her at a later time this summer.
