Obituary

Kenton Klassen of Lucknow passed away at Cancun, Mexico, on Friday March 21, 2025, at the age of 56. Loving husband and travel partner of Maureen. Steadfast and loyal brother to sister Kara (David) and brother Landon (Mandy). Wise uncle to nephews Ardis, Noah, Liam, Wyatt (Klassen) and Wyatt (Matchett). Source of fun and laughter for his friends, colleagues, and his relatives from the Klassen, Warkentin, Nabuurs, Galloway, and Becker families as well as his Matchett in-laws.

Born in St. Catharines in 1968, Kenton was the energetic and curious son of Walter and Betty Anne (Driscoll). He grew up in the northern community of Schreiber, where he enjoyed snowmobiling, hockey, badminton, and volleyball. His experiences at his family's camp on Walker's Lake contributed to his love of nature, the outdoors, and being close to water. His interest in the wider world led to many national and international travel adventures. For 26 years, Kenton brought his enthusiasm for learning, his positive nature, and vast knowledge to his role as a teacher, encouraging a questioning mindset towards established institutions. He and his extensive repertoire of stories will be remembered fondly by his Geography students at F.E. Madill Secondary School as well as the members of the volleyball and soccer teams he coached over the years. He valued community involvement, and contributed for 24 years in big and small ways to the Lucknow Kinsmen and Kinettes, HAWK Theatre, and to Music in the Fields. All who knew Kenton will remember his passion for travel, food, cultural diversity, gardening, cooking, astronomy, geology, weather systems, his three beloved cats, and his philosophy of life ("Live Generously").

Kenton's escapades during his rich and meaningful life will be the subject of stories for years to come for those who had the opportunity to have him in their lives, even if only for a short time.

A celebration of Kenton’s life will be held in Port Dalhousie at the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 350 (57 Lakeport Rd, St. Catharines) on Saturday April 26, 2025 from 2-5 PM.  Memories will be shared at 3 PM and free parking is available.  A local celebration of life will be held at the Lucknow Legion Br. 309 on Saturday May 3, 2025 from 1-4 PM with memories to be shared at 2 PM.  Donations to the Kenton Klassen Memorial Award or charity of your own choice are greatly appreciated as expressions of sympathy and can be made below.

Mark and I were heartbroken to hear of Kenton's passing. Many tears have been shed for Maureen and family. Kenton was a very happy, warm, "welcoming to all", "fun to be around", intelligent, "willing to share", guy. There is so much more we could say about Kenton but the most important is that he will missed! Sending our condolences. We made a donation on his behalf to the school memorial fund in his name. We will be at the May 3rd celebration of life to give you all big hugs. Kenton was loved by so many. So glad that he was in his "happy place" when he passed.

I’m deeply saddened to hear of your passing. You were an incredible teacher. What made you so special were all your great stories—every class with you felt like an adventure, and it never felt like learning in the traditional sense. You made education come alive, and I always looked forward to your class. It is unfair & heartbreaking your journey was cut so short. You will always be remembered Mr Klassen

Maureen and Family, We send our sympathy to you and Kenton's family. My time at Madill did not intersect with his but through the alumni grapevine I was aware of the positive impact he had on his students and athletes. Treasure your memories of the time you shared with him.

What a beautifully written tribute! I was so saddened and shocked to hear of Mr. Klassen's passing. I have fond memories having had him as a teacher for travel and tourism, and, I think, English media. "Encouraging a questioning mindset" could not be more true, as this was exactly the role he played for me. He opened my eyes to new perspectives, and I'm confident that without experiencing his teaching my path may have looked quite different. He's gone too soon, but has left a lasting, and positive imact on so many. Keeping his friends and family in my thoughts as they mourn this tremendous loss.

Kenton set a wonderful example of enjoying life to its fullest. He inspired his students with frank and meaningful discussions about ideas, current events and the world around them. There is no doubt that he will be very much missed by the whole Madill community. All of our love to Maureen and the rest of Kenton's family.

I will always hold special memories of Mr. Klassen as a wonderful high school teacher. Back then I just referred to him as “Klassen”. I would often be picked up from school & since his classroom was near the pick up spot, it became a habit for me to chat with him while I waited. He was fun, accepting, and made it a safe space for me & everyone else. I felt he believed in me & my dreams that took me beyond the small town I grew up in, I recall his encouragement of the ideas I had. I’ll always remember Klassen as a special person. Sending my condolences to Ms Matchett, his family & friends.

To Maureen and family: Kerri and I extend thoughts and prayers on these most difficult of days. It is rare that we meet an individual who was himself at all times. He could talk with hobos and kings and still be the same intelligent, caring and concerned individual. I had the pleasure of playing slow pitch softball with Kenton and he could make it more fun, even if we were losing. He is missed . Kerri & Mike
