Obituary

Michael Moore Snobelen, of Goderich, passed away peacefully at home, on June 1, 2024, surrounded by his loving and devoted wife, Anita Mallette Snobelen, and their family. He was 76 years old and had fought a courageous battle with cancer.

Michael is the beloved father of Tanya Leppington and her husband Larry, and Sam Snobelen and his wife Wanda, all of Huron-Kinloss.  He is predeceased by his youngest son, Troy, who passed away in 2019. He is also fondly remembered by their mother, Judy Snobelen, of Huron-Kinloss.

Mike is loved by six grandchildren, Brooke, Annie and Kate Leppington, and Cole, Eve and Carter Snobelen, and their mother, Amy. His grandkids brought joy and youth to his life.  Mike took great pride in their accomplishments and adventures, and took time to teach them about farming and take them to Blue Jays games.  Many life lessons were taught by Grandpa Mike.
Mike became a loving member of Anita’s family, and will be fondly remembered by her son Colin Labadie, of Winnipeg, daughter Nicole Slatford and grandchildren Danni and Fiona, of Tecumseh.  He will be missed by Anita’s brother, Peter Mallette and his wife Susan, of Chatham, and sister Colleen Lantin and her husband Maurice, of Belle River.  Mike and Anita loved to travel and saw many lovely destinations, but he especially loved time together in Florida at their condo in Clearwater. Together, they would go to the Blue Jays spring training each year.  They enjoyed countless hours watching the ever-changing views of Lake Huron from their home in Goderich.

Mike was predeceased by his father, Samuel, in 1968, his mother, Margaret, in 1979, and his brother, Samuel Brian, in 2015.  In 1964, when Mike was 16, Sam, Margaret and his brother Brian moved to the 4th concession of Huron Township from Kent County. A bold move in that day, one that grew into a family legacy. From humble beginnings, and through Mike’s work ethic, he led his entire family, demonstrating that hard work and dedication were the key to growing a successful business. That legacy continues to grow and thrive. Today, Snobelen Farms Ltd. is recognized as one of the largest family-owned grain businesses in Ontario, with export divisions reaching many parts of the globe. In 2009, Mike returned to his farming roots and enjoyed his retirement years, farming in Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh.

In 1976, Mike was elected Reeve of Huron Township. Taking a seat at the Bruce County Council was a proud moment in his municipal career. In 1980, Mike began developing subdivisions with partner, Wayne Lowry, along the Lake Huron shoreline and in Kincardine  Blair’s Grove, Heritage Heights, Murdock Glen and Lynden Estates, all now beautiful places many call home.  In the 1980’s, Mike served terms as the school board Trustee for Huron Township and Ripley, serving two years as the Chairman of the Bruce County Board of Education. He was a proud member of the Ripley-Huron Legion where he supported many community initiatives.

Mike was an influential person who left a legacy not only in the grain and farming community, but he left his mark on many people and places.  It was always important to him to remain humble and always show integrity with everyone he met.  He always saw the good in everyone. We will miss his infectious smile, the twinkle in his eye and his optimism.

“Virtually every day is a good day, some are just a little better.”

A private funeral service will be held on Friday, June 7 at the MacKenzie &McCreath Funeral Home in Ripley.  A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 8, from 1-4 p.m. at the Lucknow Community Centre. Speeches will be at 2:30 p.m. Memorial donations to the Ripley-Huron Legion and the Alexandra Marine and General Hospital Foundation would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.

I met Mike several years ago in the 1990’s and discussed how transponder technology could be used as a tool for tracing back grain cargos to farm of origin. I was so delighted in his inquisitiveness into something new. Several years later at the Park House we continued to discuss “ heady” topics such as what can you do to run a more profitable business. Since Covid I have missed him and our chats. Intelligence, charm and yes that endearing twinkle in his eye ,I will remember.

We are thinking of you and your family during this time of sorrow. My cousin Mike was so thoughtful to keep in contact with my mom and our family through the years. Mom was always thrilled to hear from him and was very proud of all his accomplishments in business and politics. She would easily slip into a southwestern Ontario cadence of speech around him as they reminisced. My family always enjoyed his visits to our cottage in Erieau. On a personal note, he was the only person who still called me by my full given name, Betty Ann, and I will miss that very much. May he rest in peace.

Our sympathies on the passing of Mike. In addition to his business sense, he was a strong leader within the bigger community. I approached Mike in 1982 about the Lucknow & District Kinsmen Club purchasing property from him located behind the then firehall. With very little negotiation needed, I asked Mike what cost would it be. His response was "Let's make it two dollars so as to be legal." From that "donation" there has now been over 40 years of ball played at the Lucknow Kinsmen Ball Diamond. His generosity was hugely appreciated. Please accept our condolences.

Message from Shirley Clark2024-06-04 18:03:33
Anita and Snobelen family I was saddened to read of Mike’s passing. .I have always enjoyed seeing Mike. Over the last few years he was here doing some Snobelen family history, .Being that I am the oldest living member of the Snobelen clan” in this area. I had eighty plus years of memories of his grandparents, and he had more questions than I had memories. I will never forget the day I saw him, and he had gone to St. Paul’s United Church at Kent Center, and sat in the pew his grandparents had sat in. He had done this several times when he was down. Mike is among many of my “Uncle JJohn Snobelen’s family” who have made remarkable achievements in life, and made very positive contributions to their communities. My memories of Mike are fond, and they go back to the day I heard my dad tell us that Sam and Margaret had a little boy. Shirley Clark Mike. - A life well-lived, A rest well-deserved.

In 1974 I worked for Bill Wylds hauling products for Snobelen Farms. I was to many farms and elevators in southwestern Ontario and not once did I hear a bad word about Mike from anyone that I came in contact with. While doing my job there I was treated with respect and even got complimented if the work I performed warranted it. I haven’t seen Mike much in a long while but when we did see one another it was always the same Mike I knew from the time I was there. My condolences go to all his family, relatives and friends because I know how much he will be missed. Dave Cuyler, Rest In Peace Mike.
