Rae Evans Johnson
May 17, 1937
December 22, 2016
Rae Evans Johnson of Ripley passed away on December 22, 2016 at the Kincardine Hospital, at the age of 79. He was the beloved husband of Betty (Noble) for 53 years. Rae was born in Uxbridge, Ontario on May 17, 1937 to the late Sadie (Evans) and Jack Johnson. Dear dad of Lisa (Andrew) Gardiner of Cobourg, and Bill (Martina Aisenpreis), of Point Clark. Cherished Poppa of Madelene, Rebecca, and Jackson. Survived by his sister Donna Barkey and sister-in-law Carol Johnson. He will be missed by his many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his brother Lloyd and his brother-in-law Frank Barkey. Rae was “one of those guys”. He could fix and maintain just about anything….gardens, various buildings, tractors, gas engines, appliances, vehicles….the list goes on. He also liked to share, with all who would listen, how to fix all of the above with a good measure of “advice” mixed in… Friends, neighbours, family….we will be repeating his sayings and relying on that advice for years to come. An avid fisherman and hunter, he shared these passions with his son Bill, and then continued them on to his grandchildren almost as a full time position. Not that long ago, he reached one of his lifetime goals and bagged a turkey. There may have been a large celebration in Ripley at this time - he really felt he had made it. A good measure of respect from Rae would be whether or not you could start an outboard motor, bait your own hook and clean your own fish. While he dispensed advice frequently to his children and grandchildren (and most frequently to Betty), he also loved to share with his son and daughter in law - they both quickly learned to take that advice as he was usually right. Andrew quickly learned that Lisa needed to usually “ask my Dad first”. Rae was also happy to welcome Martina into the family - she and Rae had a special kind of sparring relationship which they both equally enjoyed. There is a large space left for us now, in the place he has occupied in our hearts for many years. Betty will miss her lumberjack, nature loving, gardening and antique expert husband. We will remember him in all that we do and most especially, when we “reel another one in" at the cottage. Cremation has taken place. Visitation was held at MacKenzie & McCreath Funeral Home, Ripley on Monday, January 2, 2017 from 6-9 PM. The Memorial Service was conducted at Knox Presbyterian Church, Ripley on Tuesday January 3, 2017 at 1:30 PM, with visiting 1 hour prior. Rev. Ruth McLean officiated. Karen Martyn was organist.
